Julian Randall, 23, was arrested on Wednesday in San Jose and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. He was booked into the jail on suspicion of attempting to commit federal felony conspiracy to commit acts of espionage, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The FBI’s San Jose office is investigating whether Randall was involved in the scheme, which involved phishing email addresses, spoofing system passwords and other cyber-crime activity.
Randall and his girlfriend, Jessica Jones, 15, were caught on surveillance video and awaiting arraignments when they were arrested at their home on the 100 block of Longview Avenue on Monday evening, sheriff’s spokesperson Mark Bostic said.
Detectives initially said the plot was to steal financial information and a laptop to get into a private home in the 900 block of El Camino Real, but they later said they were interested in other things, according to Bostic.
“It’s really a sad day for the community because we all know that this is a horrible thing that happened to a young woman, and we are now at a point where we can’t stop,” he said.
The FBI will continue to investigate and make sure there is no misbehavior, Bostic said.
The San Jose Mercury News and San Jose State University are naming Randall for his criminal prosecution.
